“Spare Oom!”

Who hasn’t climbed in behind the clothes in the closet of a “spare oom”, held her breath and waited for a friend or a sibling as they counted, “twenty eight, twenty nine, thirty. Ready or not here I come!”
So many childhood memories as well as childhood fantasies are wrapped up and delivered in my favorite book series by C.S. Lewis, The Chronicles of Narnia.
Entertaining? Yes. Imaginative? Yes. But beyond that the books are chock full of God’s promised and incredibly deep introspective concepts. C.S. Lewis was in short brilliant and an amazing man of God. His faith was a deep challenging faith that even in these childrens books an adult can find peace and restoration, struggle and triumph.
Entertaining. Yes, but the Narnia series is ageless.
If you have seen the movies but not read the books, you are really missing out!
I’ve just discovered the Children’s Classics carnival over at 5 Minutes for Books, and it has been a great way to get to know other moms. I’ve also discovered a bunch of new books I need in my bookcase! 😉

I do agree with your assessment there. Every July I host a Chronicles of Narnia reading Challenge and it would be cool to have you be a part next year (if you think about it around then) as you seem to have the same passion as I do. haha!
Definitely great books to read and reread and then reread again!

I never read these as a child, and read the first one in college as part of a children’s lit class.
I need to read the whole series at some point — perhaps sharing them as a read-aloud for my little guy.

Carrie, A reading challenge sounds fun! I am reading my boys the “Little House” books right now. Maybe after I am done with them we will start Narnia and join your challenge 🙂
Jennifer, I think you would enjoy the series. How old is your little guy?
I do hope you both will come back and “visit” again.

Oh, I LOVE Narnia, too. I read Wardrobe to my little girls for the first time this year (of course, they’re only 5 and 3!), and it was a hit.

As an English major, I took a C.S. Lewis seminar in college. My professor was a C.S. Lewis devotee. It was a fascinating class. I had no idea of C.S.Lewis’ background or the Narnia series before I took the class. I enjoyed the class and his work very much. 🙂

I would have loved to take a class like that! I did, however, have a professor from England who made me think of C.S. Lewis.

I re-re-reread them while pregnant with my first, and then again after seeing the movies in the theater. (To be able to compare.) Definitely one of my favorite series (serieses? seriei?) It’s been a lousy day at the Moose household (our cat broke his leg and it had to be amputated!) so I’m gonna pop in the dvd and float away to Narnia and knit for a while. Thanks for the idea (or should I say “idear?” ;D )

another set of books I need to re-read! (Actually I’m not sure I ever read the enitre series!) I’m thinking as a read-aloud with my son, also!
